A Vacation in Denver

Introduction

This is a tale of courage, caffeine, and camping. On September 1st, 2004, Derek Lindes and Timothy Deniston embarked on the journey of lifetime. In a rusted manual sedan, the two of them set off for Denver, CO in search of fun, lodging, and a good time. Whether their quest manifested itself to their liking is at this point unknown. Read on to experience their adventures throughout the Midwest and Great Plains, and if you are lucky, you may just find some tales of the purple mountain majesties. Enjoy.

Background

Derek Lindes - Adventurer #1 is an Ohio State Graduate with a B.A. in English and a minor in Film studies. The Denver Odyssey is his attempt to fulfill his dream of seclusion and self-actualization. Not really understanding himself or his actions completely, this is his chance to figure it all out. No girl, father, or job will stop him. Dumping the love of his life is the final step to self-actualization. He has used her long enough as he lived in a world run by society, the evil he must escape. Escaping to Colorado was the finest decision he has yet to make. His woman, holding on for the hope of true love, is there to care for him despite the broken heart she has endured. Not only is she there for backup in case the adventure fails, she is easily manipulated to act just as he wishes until he reaches the point of self-actualization and those he believed to have loved before are no longer in existence. Colorado, where the "real" dreams come true.

Timothy Deniston - Adventurer #2 is also an Ohio State Graduate with a B.A. in History and a minor in Geography. The Denver Odyssey is his first time being west of St. Louis, MO other than a band trip to Los Angeles and Dallas. This is also his first time driving a manual automobile for more than a few miles. His purpose for embarking on this journey is to finally take a road trip, even though he did not squeeze it in while he was an undergraduate student. His other reason is to visit his brother, Steve, who is living in Denver and working for MC Sign Co. He is the main historian, photographer, and guide on the journey, though his position in it is no more, nor less, important than anyone else's.

Day One Day 1 began bright and early at 6:00 a.m. (EDT) when Tim woke up and began gathering up the things he would need on the trip. The day didn't begin for Derek until 9:00 a.m. (EDT) when Tim called and woke him up. The original plan was to be out of the apartment and on the road by 10:00 a.m. (EDT) so the travellers would hit St. Louis....

Day Two For our weary travellers, Day 2 began exactly as Day 1 ended. In fact, neither of our journeymen even noticed the transition between the two. At this point, Derek is asleep in the passenger's seat, with his head bouncing up and down, as Tim is at the helm eating sunflower seeds....

Day Three As Tim noted at the end of yesterday's Captain's Log, Friday would be spent at Red Rocks. Though, as you will see, not all of it. Our weary travellers, in much need of sleep, did not get to linger in slumber on the morning of the third. Instead, they rose promptly at the crack of 9:00 a.m. (MST) and began preparing for a trip to....

Day Four The fearless travellers had spent three days in the cold, then warm, then cold again grip of pre-Continental Divide Colorado. The travellers from Ohio had not quite completed half of their odyssey, yet they felt like they had taken in so much. Since this was not Derek's first trip to the Denver area, he was not in constant amazement as Tim was, but the Odyssean Duo would strive onward, not letting their lack of energy drag them down....
